On October 28th, students of Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication master’s program took a special class “Political Communication: Theory and Practice” with Professor Zhang Li. As part of the class, the students visited the EU Mission in China and participated in Model China-EU Summit and Press Conference. The EU Ambassador to China Mr. Nicolas Chapuis warmly welcomed the students and exchanged his opinions about the prospects and challenges of current China-EU relations with them.
The event was divided into two parts. During the China-EU Summit, ten students played the role of the leaders and diplomats of China and the Europe, and discussed the issues of bilateral relations, economics, environment protection, and sustainable development.
In the mock Press Conference, fourteen students played the role of media reporters from China and Europe and took turns asking questions to the representatives. The students raised pertinent and enlightening questions from the standpoint of their respective media, such as the signing of the China–EU comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI), human rights protection, and carbon emissions issues.
At the end of the event, Maria Linder, Counselor of the Political Office of the EU Mission in China, shared her own experience of participating in the model China-EU Summit. She believed that the students had shown their wisdom and skills in such high-level diplomatic consultations and she was impressed by students’ accurate understanding of their own positions and red lines. Professor Zhang Li also commented on the students' performance in the Model China-EU Summit and Press Conference.
